30-Day Poetry Challenge: Day 9

Day 9: Identifying Patterns – Identify a real-life pattern. Bring it to life in the form of a villanelle. (What’s a villanelle? Learn more here: http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/5796. Need more help? Try this: http://www.writing-world.com/poetry/villanelle.shtml.)

They are long, the nights,
and ever elusive is sleep —
insomnia is my plight

Like a crop-killing blight
engrained in the soil so deep,
they are long, the nights,

Even in the absence of light
my body and soul won’t make the leap
insomnia is my plight

No matter what I do or take to fight
this sickness still has to reap
they are long, the nights,

I often abandon my might
always feeling as if I could endlessly weep
insomnia is my plight

I worry this will someday just feel “right”
and into every hour it will seep
they are long, the nights,
insomnia is my plight.
